Unofficial reports tell me that Demopolis Police Chief Charles Avery will be seeking retirement this September. Among his reasons are the constant bad press reports and some possible health issues. From my source, Avery cited the recent column in the Democrat-Reporter where Sutton accused Avery of hiding an arrest report because it was a city employee as the proverbial straw. It was soon discovered the report wasn’t even at the DPD, but at the Marengo Co. Sheriff’s office. He expressed general disgust for always having to defend himself.

The rumor about Chief Avery retiring has been circulating for years. Chief Avery himself has mentioned retirement to me on previous occasions. The last time he mentioned it was the same time Margaret Wooley retired from E-911. However, I won't believe it until I see it! Besides, the lie Goodloe printed in the paper ain't Chief Avery's first time at the circus!
