This past Sunday I watched all the political programs, Meet The Press, Face The Nation and such. Today I watched the opening remarks of the Samuel Alito Supreme Court Associate Justice Confirmation Hearing on CSPAN. According to the Republicans Alito is the best qualified person nominated for the Supreme Court in the last 70 years. The Democrats thinks he is qualified but they don't want to confirm him. The number one concern of the Democrats, from what I heard on the news shows yesterday and the hearings today, is will Alito continue to allow women to kill their unborn babies. The Democrats want Alito to say that he will not vote to overturn Roe v Wade. Of course if he does then he's blown his vote if the issue came befor the court, if he is confirmed. The next big concern brought out today concerns the domestic spying by Bush which was brought out last month. How much power does the President have with the authority Congress gave Bush after 9/11? The Democrats are mad as heck that Bush has the opportunity to appoint to Supreme Court justices. They don't want Alito to use the "Ginsburg Rule". During her confirmation hearings she kept stating she would not answer questions concerning subjects that could come in front of the court. Even though she had been an ACLU lawyer she was confirmed with over 90 yes votes in the Senate. Some Democrats have already stated they will vote no if Alito refused to answer their questions. Alito cannot be no more right of center than Ginsburg is left of center. It is going to be an interesting confirmation. My prediction is he will be confirmed, mostly down party lines.
I agree that he will be confirmed and I further agree that it will be down party lines. The confirmation process has become a media farce. While I support the nomination, no "regular" American will know anything other than what is fed to them. It was absolutely sickening to watch Teddy Kennedy on the news up on his high horse. Riding on any coat-tails',
Teddy boy? Uggghhh...what I would not give for an original thought.

I just feel like being dirty tonight. Teddy has been sickening since he ran of the bridge.!!!
I just wish that BOTH parties would conduct confirmation hearings they way that they were intended to be conducted. The purpose of the confirmation hearings is to "confirm" the good character of the nominee and his/her adherence to American legal standards, NOT to question them about abortion, eminent domain, or any other specific topic.
Also, it seems so silly to me to spend hours questioning the man on abortion and other hot button issues when the Court rarely if ever faces those issues in cases brought before it. The majority of the time, the court is addressing issues of contract law, tort law, tax law, bankruptcy law, etc. -- certainly not as "sexy" of issues as those hot button ones, but issues that have to be addressed, none the less.
...but, I guess it would be too much to ask our elected officials to act like sensible people, wouldn't it?

Just a bunch of hot air, I am just waiting for Washington to lift off like a balloon one day....And CNN was just talking about the uselessness of the confirmation hearing. I tend to agree!!!!
Oh and this is slightly off topic, I wasn't familiar with the term "Nihilist", so I had to look it up. They were an interesting group with a set of interesting beliefs. I learned something new today thanks to Demopolite!!!!
