Forced Military Retirement

I have a total of 17 years in the United States Air Force, 4 Active, 13 Air National Guard. Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Noble Eagle,,been there. Anyway, two years ago, I found out that I had Type II diabetes. A medical waiver is possible. The medic at our unit has always told me that everything "looks good." Both my doctors here in Mobile have said that I am fine, watch what I eat, exercise, etc. Now, it looks like that I am being kicked out. I can still get a medical retirement, what hurts is that I can still serve my country, I am in better shape than I have been in a while! I just would like to stay. Maybe I can get VA disability or something, this has just hit me like a ton of bricks. Thanks for listening, Aim High!

They've given me a number, and taken away my name!

Re: Forced Military Retirement

Nothing final yet, I can still attend drill, just not be put on orders. What will be sad is if they take the word of a doctor in Jackson over the documented tests from my docs here in Mobile.

They've given me a number, and taken away my name!

Re: Forced Military Retirement

Appeal to a higher command. If you want to stay in fight the retirement with all you have. I had diabetics in my platoons who had to carry their meds around in a thermos and I had to make sure they were supplied with ice. Of course they were also restricted from some duties such as driving military vehicles and operating certain machinery. Also seek help and counseling from one of the veterans organizations. The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) all have Service Officers at the VA Regional Office on Perry Hill Road in Montgomery. The building is located in front of the VA Hospital. If you are a member of one of these organizations take a visit to Montgomery. Mickey Payne with the VFW is very successful with his claims. Also each county has a State Veterans Service Officer. The state VSO can counsel you on POSSIBLE state and federal benefits. For example if you were a resident of Alabama when you entered active duty, receive at least a 20% disability rating among other factors, your children may receive their college education free. Since you were in Desert Storm, there MAY be a connection with your Type II diabetes and your service time there.

Re: Forced Military Retirement

Are you going before the medical review board? If they decide you are not fit for duty you can appeal their decision. As long as you can control it with medication and its under control they shouldn't be able to kick you out.

Sorry to hear about that. I know you're doing what you love and loving what you do. I hope it all works out for you and you can still stay in. Keep your head up!

Re: Forced Military Retirement

First and foremost, Thank you for serving our country. I really hate to hear that for you....I know what it's like to not be involved in a career that you love. Dont give up till the fat lady sings.....and if she does sing, who knows what wonderful opportunities are out there for someone that has served his country with the pride that you show!

Re: Forced Military Retirement

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about your diabetes! Fortunately for you, diabetes is not a disability, and I don't think they could make you retire for that reason. If you were having complications from the diabetes such as heart problems, vision problems, neuropathy, then maybe. Thank you for your dedication to your job....it's people like you that we need in the military!

One day at a time!!!!
