Link loses his cel-shaded look for the latest in the popular Zelda series. Twilight Princess will likely be the last Zelda game for the GameCube before it's replaced by Nintendo's next-generation console, the Revolution. Huge boss battles, mounted combat, and classic Zelda gameplay should make this game both nostalgic and novel.
To accompany Twilight Princess's more realistic visuals, the game has a darker and more violent bent than past Zelda titles. Somehow -- Nintendo hasn't spilled the beans on the plot yet -- Link becomes a werewolf, and when in wolf form he'll be able to speak with the game's other animals. One dungeon, showed at a demo back in May 2005, required Link to cooperate with friendly monkeys to make progress. It's hardly Ape Escape, but despite the darker tone you won't be tackling the game's foes alone.
Twilight Princess will also be playable on the backwards-compatible Revolution, and it's rumored to have minigames or extra content designed for the Revolution's innovative motion-sensing controller. Zelda games have been around in one form or another since 1986, making it one of the longest-running and best-loved video game series of all, and if Twilight Princess can deliver on its promise, we'll be in for a real treat in 2006.
