I need help with lots of things
ok lets get started. i have an old Toshiba Sattelite Pro 440cdt. i will admit, it's used and i have no idea waht it runs on. it says WINNT in the explorer, and starts up as Windows 2000 pro. it has a 1.37 gig hard drive. so i bought an external hard drive. Western digital 120gb. so i plug it into the USB drive in my lappy and nothing happens. I have the Windows XP Disk on standby incase i need it, so WHAT SHOULD I DO???
Man, I'm not even supposed to be here today!

Windows NT has some issues with USB. Not sure on details, but we used to run NT at work and nothing USB would work. That is probably your problem.

Sounds like you have an old pc that someone has installed Windows 2000 pro on. Windows 2000 will usually create a folder called NT to install itself. W2K is horrible so far as drivers go. It probably doesn't have the driver for the usb hard drive. If you got a disk with the new hard drive use that. It should have the drivers on it.

So far as the xp disk is concerned 1.37GB isn't enough disk space to install it. In fact W2K pro is probably using almost all of it. My advice would be to install Windows ME on the computer. It uses less disk space, has better driver support (it will probably recognize your external hard drive without a problem), is still supported by Microsoft, and I'm sure it would run faster on that pc.

USB hard drives and USB thumb drives are natively supported in Windows ME, 2000 and XP.

It is a 3.5 inch external hard drive with its own power source, correct?

On some older systems, the USB ports are not delivering the proper voltage to handle some devices. I don't think another operating system would work any better, I'm betting on hardware.

I do agree, it would probably work better with an older OS, but I'd sacrifice a finger before ever installing Windows ME on purpose. Windows 98SE uses the same drivers as ME and has far less issues. Personally, I'd probably stick with Windows 2000 as long as it isn't horribly slow.

I don't that what would do any good (If you could do it). The USB drivers on the XP disk are for windows XP.
