Not that it needs any...

I'm wondering though why businesses that can benefit from the swell of out-of-towners due to the Footwash Festival don't attempt to cater to that? Hotels, restaurants, gas stations all have to see more money during the footwash than during a regular week, though I've never seen a sign in from of the Holiday Inn Express saying "Welcome Footwash Participants!"

I can understand how the history and stigma of the Footwash might not be the image you want in front of your business, but I doubt any hotels are denying reservations to anyone coming to participate in the festival.

When an event happens like the Footwash Festival and COTR, ALL the dining and motel businesses in Demopolis are going to have all they can handle, if they want it or not. Even though some businesses may not want some of the people who attend the Footwash, they cannot deny them service. We don't need Jesse down here. I would not be afraid to bet that over 90% of the motel rooms in Demopolis are already booked for COTR weekend.

Businesses place ads for two main reasons: When sales are slow or for goodwill.

I just don't see self respecting buisnesses associating themsevels with the footwash. I know it is BIG event that many people love to go to, but it really isn't any secret as to what goes on down there. By puting up a sign advertising anything with the footwash may reflect negatively on that business, guilt by association. Some people won't care, but many will. And as a buisness person you want to keep as many people happy as possible.

The whole footwash thing amazes me. (Arkansas, my homestate, would never stand for something like this, so I am totally floored by this "festival"!)

Whether business's benefit from it or not, I wouldn't suggest they show support for this kind of "get-together".
