I have lived here in Alabama all my life. So I don’t really know what it is like to live out in California, or other large states. But I do know that I am rather proud to be where I am from. Alabama is constantly getting a terrible reputation on just about anything. The mere mention of our states name brings images of “Rednecks”, and stupidity to peoples mind that aren’t from here. Granted we have some back-woods people in this state, but this doesn’t reflect the general population in my opinion.
The people here in Alabama are different than that of any other state in the US. This is what makes this state great. But because we are different, we are generally ridiculed for it. Our speech is different (the ‘ol southern draw), our leisure activities are different (more hunting and fishing), and we dress a little different too ( boots and blue jeans for the most part). A lot of people have jacked up 4X4 trucks, even a few of the ladies! But that is what I love about this state. Sure we could be more like California or New York and all talk with the accents, and ride in low-riders and luxury cars, but that is not who we are. Here, though, is what DOES need to change in Alabama:
Ranked 10th in unemployment
Ranked 49th in education
Ranked 5th in poverty level
These are the things that must change in Alabama to make it better. We need to take more pride in our state and try to improve these things. If we all work together just a little bit, to try and make just a little difference, then we can get a great deal accomplished.
Alabama is a great place to live and I for one will never live anywhere else. I don’t want to! I am going to stay right here and do my best to better my neighborhood, town, county and even the state. Show your pride to people that talk bad about the state, and stock pile all of us into one VERY small category. And just for added positive information:
Alabama on average is 8.5 rankings less then all the bordering states in violent crime (22)
And we are only 6th (not first) in mobile homes! :)
