After reading about the idea for a 3 theatre cinemaplex in Demopolis, I thought about the other things that might really help Demopolis to be even better.
This is my Demopolis wish list.
1. Super Wal Mart
Why can't we have a Wal Mart Supercenter? I nearly pass out at the grocery prices at Food World at times, and Piggly Wiggly doesn't have enough selection for me. I would love to be able to have good selection and good prices without having to drive for an hour.
2. Chain restaurant like Ryan's or Barnhill's
I'm counting the days like everyone else for Mr. G's to reopen. Still, it would be nice to have a restaurant with plain old Alabama food that you could get in and out of quickly. No offense to the specialty food restaurants: Y'all are great! But we need something more "meat and potatoes" too, without having to pay an arm and a leg.
3. Fast food dream: Burger King
A flame-broiled Whopper Jr. when I have a hamburger urge just can't be beat. Again, we shouldn't have to drive an hour for this.
I completely agree that the Old School needs to be renovated. The Marengo Theatre would be a great place for dance recitals, the Canebreak Players, etc. And I LOVE the idea of a cinemaplex.
I love Demopolis and never intend to leave. But it is nice to dream of a few things that would make it even better.
We were going to get a Super Wal-Mart, until our Mayor decided it would put Food World out of business(which it would have). If we could get a multiplex, it would make money. Besides the shopping, the main reason folks all over Marengo COunty take the trip to T-Town is so they can watch a movie. We'd get alot of that business if we had the new movies on opening night; not when you can get them on PPV.

There are many things I think could thrive here in Demopolis.
1. Walmart Supercenter
This would be GREAT for this town. I know way too many people who drive all the way to Tuscaloosa and Thomasville to go the Supercenters, giving those cities the tax money. Food World has gotten a little better, but I have had MANY bad experiences both in shopping there, and working there in high school. A supercenter would give the people of Demop a much better place to shop, spawn more buisnesses to come in around it, and bring people from surrounding areas here to spend money.
2. Entertainment Locations
I new cineplex would be great. So would other things such as a bowling alley though. I have always thought a bowling alley such as Bama Bowl in T-Town would do really well around here. One of our biggest problems is that we just don't have much to do around here. Another thing I want is a shooting range. Before the other one closed a friend and I would go almost daily to shoot the ol' 22, but now there is just no where to go. People around here would pay money to have a place to site in rifles, shoot clay pigeons, or just plink around with a 22.
3.Eating establishments
I would REALLY like to see a good diner open up around here. Preferably one that keeps there place clean! T-Town has a chain of diners; Taylorville Diner, Northport Diner, and 15th Street Diner. If you have ever been to one of these places then you know exactly what what I want for Demop. Basically it is a little sit down place where you can get a great Hamburger Steak and some home made vegetables, all for only about 6 or 7 bucks!
If Demopolis was to actually get the things mentioned here then I might have to consider moving back home... ok.. thats not gonna happen anytime soon, but it was sure make my visits home much nicer..
I am aware that my appearance, by mortal standards, is strange, even unsettling.
If I am to be an ambassador of my people, tradition dictates that I look the part.
Sadly, those who judge me on my looks alone ignore the causes I champion
Still, when the need arises, I am a warrior.
Yes, Demopolis needs a Super Walmart and improved entertainment, But the only way to get that for our Industrial Board to actively recruit new business. I used to live in T'ville and when the In. Board finally changed from a perk for the mayors cronies and started really recruiting T'ville began to grow. I don't know who is on the Industrial Board here but they need to get moving.
Every time someone mentions that we need a Supercenter here all I hear is that it would put Food World out of business.BIG DEAL!F.W. sucks anyway.Plus, not every person would be out of a job because the Supercenter would need emplyees. As far as MY choice of new eating establishments,I'd rather see something like Appleby's or Ruby Tuesday.I hear that thatwould put the Red Barn out of business but I don't think that it that good anyway.
I think the "Red Barn" can hold it's own with any other eating establishment. As I am about the state of Alabama and tell someone I am from Demopolis, sometimes in the conversation "The Red Barn" come up. and it is always how good the food is. I am like Roxanne, we need a Burger King.
I have always heard that the reason the Mayor did not want FW put out of business is because he owns the land that FW is built on...which would mean loss of money for him if it went out of biz. Like I said, that was only something I heard, not something I know for fact.
A nice movie place, bowling ally and Applebees would be wonderful. Esp. for the teens who would not have to be traveling to Meridian or Tuscaloosa just to have a decent date.
I've mentioned this before, but for all of the newcomers to the forum, I'm gonna tell it again. A couple of years ago, I talked with a person who had been working for Bruno's for many, many years, in management. He was moved here to the Demopolis location, however, when he came in and wanted to do something to better customer service, he was told that he couldn't. The reasoning, there was no competition here, and as far as customer service or anything to better the store, forget it. People in Demopolis have to wait in long lines because FW can make it that way, thus lower manpower and a bigger profit for FW. Needless to say, this person who was telling me this, stayed here for two weeks and quit Bruno's, Inc. He lost his retirement, job, everything. Ironically, he was going to start working for Wal-mart Stores!
The only thing i wish for Demopolis is something for the kids to do other than hang at Parr's. Even in my day the best we could do was to loiter in the Hardee's parking lot. Of course that was after the riff raff caused the bowling alley to close
