I need some advice about setting up wireless internet in a house with an upstairs. Right now, we have a wireless router hooked up to our DSL modem. Our need for wireless in our apartment is primarily due to the fact we have two laptops, but we are most of the time close to the router. What would be the best setup to make a downstairs of a house and an upstairs wireless. We are going to be setting up an "office" of sorts upstairs, but our family room will be downstairs and we usually surf the net in the family room. We also want to eventually make our printer wireless also. But that is not a high priority right now.

So what sorts of additional equipment will we be needing to make sure we have good service throughout our house. Right now we have a Belkin wireless gateway router and the modem that Bellsouth sent us.

Thanks in advance for everyones help!

It's all about the strength and position of your router. If you aren't getting a signal where you have it, move it closer to the stairs, or get a longer range model.

The printer will essentially become wireless once you have a network set up. All you do is add the printer to each computer, searching for it on the network instead of the computer you are using.

0ldman set mine up - twice. Both locations had big old brick chimneys that played havoc with the signal. Anyway, he really did a great job, you may want to PM him.

We'll have a chimney to worry about too, I didn't even think about that being a prolbem. Thanks

I've set up several with an upstairs/downstairs alone with setting up the network with file/printer sharing and never had any problems. Just adjust the antennas / and if all else fails and you aren't getting a signal in part of the house, then you'll have to move the router...

Grab a tool called netstumbler off the net. This will let you walk around with your laptop and survey the area to see what kind of signal you are getting. The lower the better. It will be in decibals. Between -40 and -75 you should be getting a 54Mbps signal. Also, if that doesn't work grab a linksys AP or router that is v4 or later and I can tell you how to hack it and turn the power up on the wireless signal. They aren't very expensive. I have a wireless shot from my house to LPL's apartment and I'm getting a very good connection. They have a hacked linksys router on their end and I'm broadcasting with a 15dbi omni antenna. You should be able to tell where the best place to put the router when you survey your house with the netstumbler tool. I don't believe that you'll have too much problem getting a good signal throughout your house with that Belkin router. I don't mind talking you through anything either; just give me a shout on the cell at 334-341-3392. Name is Jeremiah.
