Begging for Money!

I was just curious to see if any of you have been approached by the lady in town that is begging for money to get home in Sumter Co.
I was at Wal-Mart yesterday putting groceries in my car when she appeared from out of no where asking if I had any spare change that she could get home on.
Told her no and never thought much more about it!
Well, today I had gone through the Community Bank drive-thru and had noticed her walking down the highway. While I was waiting to pull out onto Hwy 80 she was waving at me trying to get my attention. I acted like I didn't see her, but she kept getting closer and closer so I just floored it and pulled out in front of a line of cars to get away. All I could think was "Oh my gosh I am leaving the bank and she thinks that I have money".
Both days she was wearing a Windwood Inn shirt with a purse on one shoulder and a cooler on the other. She was also carrying a cell phone in her hand.
Can she be stopped from walking around town begging for money????

Re: Begging for Money!

I don't know about her in particular, but I've noticed an "element" at the new Wal-Mart that I never did at the old one. I have been made to feel uncomfortable there in the broad daylight. This has happened not once but several times. It almost seems as if it is a group and they have an operation set up. I am about to the point of reporting it to management, because I'm getting a bit frightened and also because the new place is nice...and already about to be unsavory. You know? I would have had the same reaction as you, though, 4Fuqua. Thanks for your post, now I don't feel quite so paranoid.

Re: Begging for Money!

I have also noticed the influx of "beggers". I have been approached on
4 different occasions by "Katrina Survivors". At least that is what they
tell me. 1 was there rebuilding and had his car stolen (which had all of his
belongings) and was trying to get the money up to go home to Bham to
stay with his parents. 1 was trying to go through Alabama to find his wife
and daughter who were relocated up here from New Orleans (he didn't know
where.) The other two just had fled up to Alabama and were homeless...
I don't know what's true or not but it pays to err on the side of caution.
In all cases they asked for money. One of those I just mentioned was
in the parking lot of Walmart. The other 3 in the parking lot of Greenetrack.

Whenever I see an old lady slip and fall on a wet sidewalk,
my first instinct is to laugh.
But then I think, what if I was an ant, and she fell on me.
Then it wouldn't seem quite so funny.

Re: Begging for Money!

I'm sorry, but I just got a laugh out of that. In the parking lot of Greentrack. I would say that was not a "Katrina Victim". I really hate to say that, but enough is enough.

Re: Begging for Money!

I hate to see that happen to the new Walmart. It's a really nice store and hate that I moved off just as it was opening. I do go everytime I'm in town. Maybe DPD need to be made aware of the situation (if they don't already). They can trespass those people from the premises and have them arrested.

Re: Begging for Money!

What about the tall thin black man that has a speech impediment that begs for $4.00 everyday. I have only worked in the Demopolis area for a little over a year now and I assume he is a local who has been doing this for years but it sure is annoying. Most times I don't mind buying them a burger or a drink if I have money to spare but I'm not giving them money.

Re: Begging for Money!

This guy only wants money to buy crack. For years I thought he was deaf, but he isn't. He will bother the crap out of you, but won't harm you. Just don't give him money.

Have you seen him buying crack before!?!?!?

I've recently been to new orleans & nashville... they had a lot of homeless. In Nashville we were sort of planning our street crossing to avoid them.. we were playing "dodge the homeless"...

usually I have no problem giving somebody a ride, buying them food -- or giving them food (people at interstate off ramps love a bag of potato chips that you didn't finish or candy or something... I rarely give money though -- but that doesn't happen to me very often. Usually they ask for money to buy food... and instead of the money... i go to the nearest gas station or mcdonalds & get them a $5 meal... it's simple... But usually the ones that only want money... have some weird reason (usually unbelievable)...
