K, all you puter experts...I need a little advice...My computer got a Trojan Virus, don't ask how ... and it's effecting my desktop. Norton has deleted the files but I'm still getting 4 popups saying files can't be found..blah blah blah...well, I'm backing up everything so we can reformat my computer and start fresh. My question is, will I lose all of my yahoo, hotmail, outlook emails/addys or are they safe? I'm a packrat when it comes to emails and there's really too many to try to save, so I'm trying to make sure they're safe before I reformat. Another question is, how can I make sure I save everything needed to reinstall yahoo messenger, ICQ, and MSN messenger and will all of my contacts be saved as well? Any and all help will be appreciated!!!

Ok. First, Goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do the online virus scan to make sure you're free of the virus. (Sometimes a virus can mess up your antivirus software if you installed the software after the infection.)
Next, what kind of operating system are you running? If you are currently running XP, you can do what's called a "repair install", which if done correctly will allow you to just fix your windows system and keep your other files intact.

I ran the online scan and it caught 2...they were uncleanable, but it let me delete them...when I rebooted, the popups were still there, so I'm not sure if they're gone....Does this also mean that Norton is not working properly?
I'm using Windows 98...what should I do now?

Probably Norton was installed on top of a virus or 2, which could make it unable to clean those viruses already in your system.
I'm pretty sure the popups you're getting are windows errors, probably caused by the viruses.
Now, depending on your system, you might want to consider upgrading your windows. What you might be able to do is just upgrade your windows operating system, this way avoiding the need to reformat your HD. If you didn;t already have it, you can get Windows 98 2nd edition which will update the regular version of 98. Or, I think you can just update/uipgrade with the original 98 disk, which would just do a clean install over the top of your original(hopefully fixing any file errors). I'm going to let Brian chime in on this one, since he's the expert.

What version of outlook are you using? Standard Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office, or Outlook Express. Also, your popups may be due to spyware and not a virus. Get a program called Spybot search and destroy (link provided). Run it's update, and run a scan of your pc. Have it Fix all. You may say you need to reboot and run the scan at startup, just say YES, and reboot. It will run again on startup. Then fix the problems it finds again.
Go here to download Spybot search.
Also, I split this thread into it's own post. No need to keep attaching stuff to an old thread.

As far as your instant messenging programs are concerned, once you get rid of the trojan, virus, or spyware that's infecting your system all you should have to do is reinstall these programs either from a backup or just redownload them and then log back into them with your original username and password when you connect to the internet and you should still have all your contacts because I believe the contacts are stored on the webservers of those programs and not just your harddrive.

I've ran the Spybot twice and it seems to freeze up after scanning around 5000 files (at least that's what I think the numbers mean) It lets me "fix" them but I'm not sure it's getting the whole system scanned...I'm gonna keep trying, just in case I'm doing something wrong...
I have Outlook Express 6 (that's what pops up when I go to my Outlook mailbox).
Here's the popups I'm getting at startup...
1st..Cannot find file "msinfo.exe" or one of it's components.Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
2nd...(Desktop) Could not load or run "msinfo.exe" specified in the WIN.INI file. Make sure file exists or remove reference to it in the WIN.INE file.

Spybot will slowdown and even seem to pause for a long time around 5000 mark, just give it time. Also, to get rid of those popups, Click Start, Run, then type MSCONFIG and click OK. Click the startup tab. Each one of those items listed with a check mark next to it is what is loading or trying to load on boot. Go thu that list and uncheck anything with msinfo in it. Also, you can take out programs that are loading on boot that you don't want loading. If your not quite sure what something is, just leave it be.

Finally, the popups are gone!! However, I'm still not getting anywhere with the Spybot...I left it scanning for over an hour and it never got past the 5000ish mark...should I reinstall it or what should I do?

I had the same problem with Spybt one time... But I can't remember the solution to save my life I want to say it cleared up when I updated the program, so reinstalling it might just do the trick. Also, I would defrag the HD if you havne't already done so.

If you're still having problems with Spybot then you may want to try Lavasoft's ad-aware which also looks for adware and spyware installed on your computer. There are three versions of the program with a free basic one. To download it go to http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/. You might have difficulty getting to the site right now since they have just posted on their support board that they are having server trouble.
