Don't buy the "Christmas on the River" T-shirts at Wal-Mart.

No one locally benefits from this! The only reason they could print the T-shirts without a copyright infringement is because they put some strange-looking flower in the trademark elf's hat.

It really amazes me that they get away with this!

Who normally prints the COTR t-shirts?

It just depends. Usually, there is a BBQ cook off t-shirt (they have a contest for designs...or used to) and then there have been separate COTR shirts. I'm not sure how it will be done this year, but I think it is a shame for Wal-Mart to profit from COTR and not local businesses.

I was wondering about thise sweatshirts..

Is the COTR logo actually copyrighted? We've considered printing shirts, hats, etc with COTR mentioned, but we wouldn't want to break any laws:)

To clarify, we wearn't planning on selling them, just for personal use/advertisement for the festival.

Someone was telling me they are thinking of copyrighting the whole phrase "Christmas on the River" soon. Not sure. I'd just ask to be sure what has been copyrighted or just has been discussed. For that matter, apparently all you have to do is put a flower in the elf's hat and there's an "unofficial" COTR elf.

I personally wouldn't mind someone locally making shirts....that's pretty much what has been done in the past. I think that's great.

It just gets me though about Wal-Mart!

A vendor in the park always sells top quality T and sweatshirts with the COTR type logo. Who profits from these sales? These are always dated. Last year he also had canvas bags available. I believe the COTR committee should start selling authorized versions for a fair price. Wal-Mart has not sold many of the shirts. I can't fault Wal-Mart from trying to make a few bucks if the logo is not copyrighted. Wal-Mart does give back to the local community. Remember the funds they just gave to the fire departments.

If the COTR committee wants to sell T-Shirts online we can help with that here.

That is a bit ghetto on Wal-Mart's part.

I do wish that the COTR committee would use our online forums as a tool for promoting the events and festivites. If you are involved in any way please feel free to let us know what we can do to help!!

I agree on the Wal-Mart shirts. I am the local director for the Our Little Miss Pageant System and we had a lot of girls come up for the float in the daytime parade. They all had to wear red or white sweats and I wanted to get COTR shirts for all of them. However, when I called the Chamber and asked who would benefit from the sales they said Wal-Mart, but they couldn't tell me where I could buy shirts that would benefit COTR.
My girls from Mobile and Lousiana sure would have liked to have them to take back home with them!!

That's an interesting point. From what I could gather, there is the same lady that sells tem every year at the park, but who actually benefits from it besides her? Also, who should actually benefit from sales of COTR merchandise?

The guy at the Bluff Hall candlelight tour was loudly talking about the Wal-Mart COTR shirts. His view was they could get their "high-powered attornies" to put a stop to it. He, and the woman beside him, also had the view that any use of the phrase "Christmas on the River" should be deemed a copyright violation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the term Christmas on the River is not a copyrighted phrase, nor is it exclusive to our festival. Ours might be the original, even the best, but it's not alone.
