Our local veterans organizations in Marengo County, VFW Post 5377 and American Legion Post 41, have received appeals from their national headquarters for additional funds to support our veterans and wounded troops in military and VA Hospitals nationwide. We hear everyday about those killed in action on a daily basis. What we don't hear about are the hundreds that are returning each day with wounds that require extended hospital stays. Many of those wounded required amputation of limbs which also results in discharge from the service. These veterans are then placed in the VA care system which is already stressed for funds.

The VFW and American Legion supports our troops with personal care items, entertainment and recreation, and helps with expenses of family members to be near them, among other items.

We have many people from Marengo County deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan as well in other places worlwide. This is one way to show our support for them.

Anyone who wants to help with this project or to donate please leave a post and I will arrange for contact.

I know there are other appeals for funds this time of year for local causes, but a couple of more dollars from a lot of people will be a big help.

Any funds received through this effort will be presented to the VA Hospital in Tuscaloosa.
