So I don't live in Demopolis, BUT as I have said before...Demopolis is my home, it was for 34 years and I still have lots of family and friends there, so I have the right to call it home. I did go to Demopolis for COTR and I really had a great time EXCEPT for one time that was really bad, not so bad that I let it ruin my trip but bad enough that I want to vent a little. It happened the Sunday evening after COTR, when my family and I (there were 10 people) decided to go out to dinner together. Of course on Sunday there is not too much open but we had heard that Ellis V was open and that it was under new ownership and had been totally redone. We heard that the food was really good and that the service was great. So off to Ellis V it was for us. Ok, so we all get there and we saw that only ONE table was occupied with customers. Other than that the place was empty. Thinking that we will have our food very shortly, we sit down and began to order. Some of our meals came with salads which arrived about 15 minutes after ordering, that was ok since we were talking, cutting up and taking pictures. About 20 minutes later we actually got some rolls. At this time we were beginning to wonder on the food. Finally our food arrived 50 minutes after ordering. I thought my food was OK..thats all just OK. Not great but not bad. One person who ordered Fried Catfish claimed that it was not good at all. He stated that there were some weird tasting spices on the fish. And one person who had ordered spaghetti took three bites and claimed that it was horrible. Now this I wanted to taste of since I was paying for it. IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!!! This stuff actually smelled and tasted sour!. The waitress claimed that it had just been made fresh, but that the cook was from some other country and apparently added different spices to it. I told her that it would have been better if he had just went across the street to Food World and bought a jar of Ragu sauce instead. Then came our checks... The waitress had taken the liberty of adding her TIP to all of our checks. She claimed that she does that to any party of 10 or more. Now as I stated earlier there were 10 of us and we did all sit down at the same table but we had split up into 3 separate families. It would have been no different if we had sat at 3 different tables; in fact it was easier for her. ...OK so I looked at my check more closely and I noticed that she had added her TIP onto the TAX... OMG That was it!!! I became FURIOUS!!!!! I have the good fortune of being able to travel all over the US and I have eaten in MANY very extremely nice (4 and 5 star) restaurants sometimes in groups of 20 or more and NEVER NEVER has any waitress/waiter ever added the tip onto the tax. THIS IS WRONG!!! She didn't do anything for that extra money. This was just a sneaky way for her to get a little more tip money. I HONESTLY got the feeling that she thought that we were all too dumb to notice that she tipped the tax. Leaving a tip is my prerogative and is not something I HAVE to do. I ALWAYS leave a tip according to how my service was, and I and not talking about the food but just the service. If my service is great I will leave a generous tip..more than the 15% that she added to our checks and if the service is not that great I will adjust my tip accordingly. So now I get up to go pay and I really wasn't going to say anything until the waitress asked "Was everything ok?" well.....she asked...so I told her. I went so far as to ask to speak to the manager so I could tell him but wouldn't you know it, he was gone for the night. Her excuse for the tip on the tax was...."That is just how we do it here." As for the spaghetti, she finally decided to take it off my check when I told her that I simply refuse to pay for something that was uneatable. And only because she did that did I consent to leave her a tip. BUT I also told her that I will never be in there again and I will not refer the place to anyone. This is one of the reasons that people leave Demopolis and spend their money elsewhere for entertainment and fun. How can any businesses ever make it if this is the way they treat their customers.

I have had the catfish since the ownership change and it was good. I do believe there were too many changes to the menu.
It was great for the remodel job on the building. It is much brighter and fresh looking. I have had mixed comments from people who have dined there since the change. Most miss the old menu, especially the salad bar, and don't like the new taste of some items. I believe they should have went ahead and changed the name since it is no longer like the old Ellis V. Most people don't like a sudden change in their dining places and menu items. People will visit an eating establishment because of one menu item and when that item is deleted they don't return. Many dine at a place with so-so food but great service. Someone must have missed Food Service 101.
I completely understand about your Ellis V horrors. Two of my friends and I went there one Friday night and the service was terrible. The food wasn't great (not really good either). I haven't really mentioned it to anyone, because I was hoping they'd get the kinks worked out. I hope they do, because it would be nice to go there and not feel like it was a wasted evening.

I have had a bad experience there also. We went on a Sunday after church - most places have specials on Sundays that are reasonably priced. We all ordered lasagna - it was horrible. There were meats in there that I wouldn't eat because you couldn't tell what it was. When we got the bill it costs us over $10 a piece for it. It was certainly not worth it. I thought since the owners had done such a good job with their one restuarant in town that this one would be good too - I was more than mistaken. I certainly will not be back in Ellis V for a very long time - if ever.
All you need is an ounce of hope…a measure of faith…a touch of glory…and a taste of grace
I also had the lasagna that Sunday, but I thought it was good.I've eaten there probably 10 times and the food was good each time. There has been a few kinks in the waitstaff, some have left and some were let go.A good friend of mine has been looked at to manage the restuarant and I believe he's going to more than help Ellis' get back on its feet.I worked with him at a 5 star restuarant for over a year and the man knows fine dining. The chef is european, and has a little problem with some english, but cooks alot a different dishes many people around here haven't tried.I know that some people go to the same restuarant the same day of every week and order the same hamburger steak that they've ordered for the past 30 years.I think these people need to open their eyes to change.I also think that it's great for anyone to try to bring some kind of change to this town.I understand that some people are not going to like this at first, but try not to criticize to much until they at least get back on their feet good.
WEll, I hope so too..The place did look nice, but My Gosh...how hard it is to make spaghetti??

I went with my girlfriend after the COTR parade and man it was packed and they only had like 2 waitresses there. We waited about 45 mins for our food and it was pretty bad. I use to love eating at Ellis V but now I would rather eat at Taco Bell and I hate Taco Bell.
Moving on up, Moving on up to eastside, to those deluxe apartments in the sky!!!.
I won't comment on the food or service because I haven't been there since the change, but the verbal reports I've gotten from folks that have gone haven't been the best.
They did advertise a "new flavor" when they were remodeling, and they seem to be holding to that. My opinion on foreign quisine is basically: If it tastes good, it tastes good, if it doesn;t, it doesn't. Different tastes for different palletes. But, just because I've enjoyed a ribeye steak and baked potato all my life doesn;t excuse a dish from tasting like ***.

I ate there with my family about a month ago and it was HORRIBLE!!! I ordered some kind of BURNT chicken and pasta crap that took over an hour for them to make. I was really pisssed off to see that the salad bar and soup bar was gone!!!! For having such a simple menu you would think that they would be able to cook that stuff right but this is not the case. I would rather pull over on the side of the road and eat a road kill feast than to ever eat at ELLIS V again.
