View Full Version : Rob for Mayor
As a man of the people,a working man,I want to know what is on the minds of the people.I need to know what issues are most important to the people of Demopolis and what they expect in the future.I might not be everyone's idea of the "perfect" canidate for the position but I can guarante what the public needs in office, honesty and loyalty.I would do what would be best for not only Demopolis, but the surrounding areas as well.Who's the first one to jump on my bandwagon?
Rob, you are the choice for a brighter tomorrow...

yea he won. Think he is working on his last year of office. He has some health problems now that will keep him from running again. Has done a lot for the town
Just curious-- Are you living in the city limits now or are you still in Gallion? I'm not sure what the limitations are with your residence vs your ability to vote/run for office. I remember an issue with Bob Biggs when he ran some 8 years ago (besides killing his wife) was he used an empty lot on Jackson st as his address instead of his house outside the city limits.
I live within the Demopolis city limits, but my mailing address is Gallion.
I've been told that you have to pay to run for mayor.Anyone know how much it costs to start out?

Can't wait Rob. Good Luck. What are your plans for Demopolis?
I've got to talk to my campaign manager before I release a slogan,or even my future goals for Demopolis.I am ready though to hear some of the concerns of the people of Demopolis for this upcoming election.
I've been recently informed that I have until the first week in July to put my name in the running for mayor.I will get back to you with more details on my campaign.
Does anybody know for sure who else is running with me?
Mike Grayson is the only candidate to formally say he is definately running (bisides yourself). Ronnie O'Neal has just formally announced he will not seek re-election for city council. He could very well end up a candidate as well.
Ben Sherrod, though he hasn't announced anything yet, is always a bet to run. He recently gave a tour of his new house on the Gazette, which I could only see as more "shopper's guide filler" or a reason for Sherrod to get into the press.
I heard Freddie A. might be running also.

I thought that he always ran for mayor...
It really doesn't matter who it is that's running,I plan on doing my best in this campaign.Although it's going to be a very low-dollar campaign I believe I can get my points out there.
I would love to see this site used in the upcoming campaign for the canadates. We can start a new thread for debate between the canadates, and give the people a chance to ask questions
When I first started this thread I asked for anyone to come forward with their concerns toward any issue in the upcoming election.I want to see what the people of Demopolis see as what needs to focused on in the next few years.

rob, looks like Wal-Mart is trying to take away one of your ideas to accomplish when you are elected mayor. I see in the Times where Wal-Mart people are poking around Demopolis. A Supercenter will attract people from York, Livingston and Eutaw that would be going over to Meridian and Tuscaloosa Supercenters. Also it will make Food World have to compete and not just be the only one or two food stores in town. It is so depressing to have to shop at our Food World here in Demopolis after shopping at a "real" Food World in Tuscaloosa.

I'm not knocking the people who work at the Demopolis Food World. Most of the people there give great customer service. The building is just too old and small for our area. There is no comparrison to the facilities here and those in the Tuscaloosa areas of Hillcrest, on Skyland or over in Cottondale. More people would shop here in town instead of Tuscaloosa, Meridian or Selma if the facilities were better.
I heard that the price of the land around here being so high was the main reason WalMart hasn't put a Supercenter here.
It certainly isn't higher than in more urban areas (ex: Birmingham and many others)!
It has always been said that SuperWalmart couldn't locate inside the city limits because of some deal between the city and Food World/Bruno's. I'm not sure....did anyone else hear that?

I have heard both things - I have heard that the land was too much and then at another time I heard that Mayor Caldwell had made a deal with Food World/Bruno's that he wouldn't let another (competitive) grocery store in the limits.
That would be something that I would definitely look into.
Any new news on who all is running this year?
Grayson is still the only "official" entry. Woody Collins has made statements that the money isn't worth it--but that was before the increase in pay. Sonny Bono (aka Ronnie O'neal) hasn't said anything either, even though he doesn't plan on running for the council again.
Mitchell Congress is making a stink over the redistricting of the city. He could possibly be laying the groundwork for a run at office. Ben Sherrod always seems to run, but hasn't mentioned anything yet.
Someone needs to announce intentions soon. Grayson doesn't see the Mayor position as a full time affair. He now operates a restaurant, meat and wine store, and his insurance business. He's already stated he doesn't plan on giving any of those up, but rather work around them. Anyone that approaches the job with intentions of working it full time has to be seriously considered. No one should win an election of this magnetude unopposed.

From what I read the Demopolis Mayor's job will be a "part-time" position but with full-time duties. Maybe Demopolis will do better with a city administrator and council with a ceremonial mayor's position. If the city administrator doesn't do the job as expected, then fire him/her and hire another. But since I don't live in the Demopolis city limits I don't have any legal say on the issue.
I do agree the next mayor must be able to treat the job as a full time position and not try and work around a private business schedule and official duties. Demopolis is getting too big and has a lot or hot irons in the fire to have a part-time mayor.
