Harley77 being the chatname used by our own webmaster Brian. Back on 7-24-00 Brian engaged a topic on the just-about dead website demopolis.com. 2 years later, those of us that created demopolis.biz, which became demopolislive.com, discussed the same points made in the post made in 2000, although none of us recalled it at the time. In August of 2002, Demopolis.com was about to expire and become available, much to the anticipation of many folk saround town and beyond (not just us). When Kevin Mckinley renewed his hold on the domain for another 3 years, a domain he has done nothing with since 2000, we decided to create a site without it. I think we've done OK.

The following is the sequence of posts in order, with screenshots provided.

Brian's initial post.

This site used to have all kinds of activity, regularly updated on the front page with various things, now its just a little sad page with the only thing going on is this bullitin board. I realize that Demoplis is a slow goin place, But I think that this site should be a good representative for the town, Instead its basically dead. Is K&P creations gone or found something to better occupy there time?

K & P Creations (Kevin Mckinley) respond.

You guessed it, K and P Creations has found something better to do with their time. Think its bad now...

It won't be long there will be nothing here...

Brian asks the question no one can get an answer to.

Well, Any plans on letting someone else take over the domain? I'm sure some Demopolite out there would love to have it,Maby you could advertise it for sale or something real cheap, Someone has got to want it. Or are you guys just gonna let it be a 404.

M^Blues (Bradley Moore) offers his services.

If the board is taking too much time to moderate or take care of, I volunteer my services.

Brian tells it like it is.

Thats just sad, If you have a domain like Demopolis.com it should be your civic duty to be responisible and either make the site the best it can be, or give it to someone else who will ...or can. VERY irresponisible of K&P to just abandon it like this. ANY RESPONSE K&P? ARE YOU EVEN THERE?

060--unknown Poster--attempts to defend K & P.

hey -- just because it says demopolis.com doesn't mean anything has to be here. ANYONE could own this domain. You all take for granted WHAT IS HERE.

You don't go around town telling people to mow their grass just because its grown too high, even though YOU think it makes the town look bad.

Don't go around telling people what to do with THEIR internet sites.

Brian drops some knowlege. The message here is basically our mission statement for Demopolis Live.

Ok, First off, Its not like were talking about some obscure domain name. If someone wants to find out about Demopolis AL, on the internet, whats the first thing there gonna do, Either Type www.demopolis.com or Do a search on Yahoo or something, and get the same link. If I was Intersted in going to a town, I'd do the same thing. Now, Most cities that have a Population of more than 5000 have an official Website of some kind that promotes there town, tells the goings on, that sort of thing. I would expect a site that says Demopolis.com would be such a site. This site used to be that way, but now has been virtually abandoned. NO ONE IS RUNNING IT. Its like a rundown eyesore in the middle of the town that people would Love to renovate and make it great, but the owner doesn't allow it. I'm not telling K&P to update it, Just give it to someone who will. And yes ANYONE COULD OWN IT, but ANYONE DOESNT OWN IT, K&P OWN IT, so thats who i'm addressing. There not doing Demopolis any favors by letting it just sit here. And thats all I have to say about that.....for now.

Phyllis offers her view.

Granted, the domain is owned by K & P Creations (whoever they may be) and it is theirs to do with as they wish as long as they pay the nominal fees to maintain the registration. They certainly have no real responsibility to anyone who visits the site, participates in discussion, posts information of offers counterpoint.

Harley77 does, however, make a very good point. It DOES exist. It IS actively used and it is a window into Demopolis. It would be nice if K & P had enough regard for that to maintain the site, respond to email sent to them when you click on the hot link that says "contact us." It does, after all, say - right under Demopolis.com - "this is officially a website"

I found out about this site 2 weeks ago when I was in Demopolis for a high school reunion. I live in Pennsylvania and was happy to see such easy opportunity to check out my home town from my current home. I will miss it if it goes away.

M^Blues offers a reason and hope! :) For the record, Mr. Moore did start a new bulletin board, but the long, complicated URL just never took.

The bulletin board won't go away... simply move. I will see to that! Demopolis.com is another story. Apparently it is generating either too small a business for K and P to keep paying for OR the bulletin board is generating too many hits making the entire site too costly. Either way, WE lose a very valuable source of information which will be dearly missed.

Phyllis hits the nail on the head. Money shut down demopolis.com; or lack thereof.

Funny how that revenue generating thing seems to be of vital import to businesses everywhere!!!

The website for the town I live in in PA - equally as small as Demopolis, just much closer to big cities - has a for sale sign at the top of it for those very same reasons.

060's last gasp. This post is what made me make this thread. If you're out there 060, do you still think we're lazy??

----FIRST, this is not demopolis, AL's "official" web site. they have one.. and i'll say it -- it is horrible.
if you hate this site so much -- then why don't you go to their other site.

Now, you sound like you really want it updated. CONTACT K&P creations.. write them out a big check & then you spend hours a day updating it with all the information you want on it.

Plenty of people can complain -- why don't you actually DO something about it? or are you too lazy?

Brian, Jeff, and myself have repeatedly emailed Mr. Mckinley in atempts to find out how much he wanted, if the domain was for sale or rent, if he had plans... We've never gotten any response. I still think if Demopolis.com should point anywhere, it should point here, but I'm biased. I'm happy with our name as it is, and wouldn't change if even if we had the domain.

But, as Brian stated over 3 years ago, it's ashame to see our city's domain pointing to an error page.
