It was officially announced that McClains EZ packing plant will be laying off 44 hourly workers, and some saleried workers. This will effectively shut down the plant. They are reportedly putting the plant up for sale.
Around 2:10 pm today, there was a reported "minor explosion" at Citidel Cement. One person noted injured and requred a trip to the hospital.
Gulf States is currently in talks to get a new contract between employees and the company agreed upon. As talks continue, the whisper of the "strike" word can be heard. Both sides do seem confident an agreement can be reached.

I wouldn't be talking strike anytime soon. Jobs are scarce and ain't getting any better in this part of the country. Besides, last time a strike was mentioned at GS, I was told the man told them he still has the same padlock his mother used to lock up the Tuscaloosa operation with...... Sorry guys, but Unemployment only pays $210/wk. With the salaries you're used to drawing, that ain't a drop in the bucket! Besides, you're already getting paid WAY better than fair market value. What do you think you've got to complain about??? Better take a good look around at other people to see what they've got before you go crapping in your nest.
Word on the vine is that Borden Chemicals - Demopolis Plant is on the verge of shutting down. This came from someone who works out there. Looks like another industry about to exit stage left.
McClain Industries announced it's layoffs and plant closing in the newspaper last week. Another one bites the dust!
Demopolis and Marengo County are losing jobs fast! Time for the politicians to roll up their sleeves and get to work! We need to save jobs or be creating them, not losing them!
McClain can still sell the plant, possibly opening up those jobs that were just lost. Jay Shows (Chamber) said he will shop the factory as soon as McClain gives the OK. The plant itself doesn't appear to be limited to waste container production.

Maybe he (Shows) will court Marathon out of Vernon, AL to see if they might be interested in expanding their operation to this area. They do basically the same thing McClain was doing.
Gulf States might shut the plant down if there is a strike but it is not very likely. the Demopolis plant drives the whole organization. Unlike when they closed the T-town plant there is no other plant to drive the organization. However times are shaky and the jobs out there are better than you could find with any other Paper mill. Most employees, salaried and hourly(union),say that the rejection is standard and that there are plenty of other contracts to negotiate with till both parties are happy.
Usually it seems the first contract offer always has cuts in things like holiday pay, premium pay on Sundays, etc. Also pensions always get looked at as well. What the union does is negotiates the contracts to ensure current workers remain at the same salaries as the previous contract, if not a little more. When negotiations start to break down, the first group of folks to lose out seems to be those that haven't been hired yet. (Look at Georgia Pacific).
I agree, though, they need to get this thing done. A shutdown of Gulf States would his this community harder than most folks actually realize.
