Turning a Rumor Into a Raise

The Bd of Ed just proved how football minded they are. Rumors start to churn and they decide to give $6000 to Goodwin for "all his hard work" before the coach mentions any thing about another job offer and possibly leaving DHS. (The Sylacaga job is for head coach not head coach & AD). Yes, Goodwin has worked toward creating a successful football program, no one can deny that. Only 2 losses in two years.... WOW.... but why not wait until he receives an offer and counter that with a pay hike if they have strong feelings toward keeping him on.

Does any one really think Goodwin will leave and go somewhere else when Devin will be a senior next fall? No matter how much money would be involved your family's feelings should be top priority.

Is Goodwin any more deserving of a raise than say Coach Moody? The baseball team is coming off a season w/ the most wins in school history in a single season and a first round trip to state play offs. Look at how many players have gone on to play at the next level. More than the football team I'm sure.

Coach Pittman took the girls basketball team to the state play offs and they got further than any team @ Demopolis has before.

And let's not forget the softball team's STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (the first ever for any female team sport). Coach Harris has worked hard to shape his girls into state champions and I'm sure he has received more than one offer to coach some where other than Demopolis. Did he get a raise for his hard work? Wouldn't that be the right thing to do?

Aren't these coaches deserving of a raise? Haven't they reached some level of success in their respective programs?

Well the Bd of Ed has proved they aren't concerned with any of that. Not concerned with the coaches and certainly not to the students at all the Demopolis schools. They talk about lack of funding and not having money for any extras much less the necessities yet they can find $500 a month. Just where did this money from?

How many teachers would stand in line for just a share of that money for classroom supplies, new books even something as basic as paper for the copy machine?

I'm in no way bashing Goodwin, no one goes into the teaching profession for the money, every teacher, teacher's aide, and all the support staff deserve way more than they make. But for the Bd of Ed to talk of money crunching and cut backs, this is not the best move they could have made.

We've also learned from a teacher at DHS that Mr Bonds, the band director, has recieved a $500 a month raise as well. This hasn't been confirmed, but we have no reason to believe it is false.

How many teachers help generate revenue for the school system? Do the sports teams make enough money to cover operating costs? Is having successful sports teams beneficial to DHS and to Demopolis in attracting new business and industry? I don't know the answers. Someone help me.

Only the football and basketball and baseball programs make enough money. I would guess.

If we could win some major state titles like baseball or football. then it would be helpful I would think.

I was talking to a teacher today about the $500.00 raise for coach Goodwin. This teacher comment was teachers at U.S Jones have to sweep their own floors because they not have money for a janitor. If we don't have money for a janitor how does the school system have money to spend $500.00 more a month on a football coach???

Ahhhhhhhhhh Fresh back in Demop off of a great youth trip wiht the Scott Dawson Evangelistic Group in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Now for my opinion on this issue for what little it is worth. I agree with sparkles about having to sweep their own rooms? Why not hire just a part time janitor? I agree with Demop Pop also. What about the other coaches that have been as far or farther than the football program? I love the Goodwins and they have been aweosme for Demopolis! i dont have anything against them, but If everyone cant get a little, i dont see any reason to give any out. The girls softball team doesn't even have lights on their field, after a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. Looks like they could get a little light. But my opinion doesn't count so whatever happens is cool with me. GOD BLESS!!!!

Look at all the people that go to football games and how much money the football program makes a game. Not as many people go to the girls softball games. Which I do think the softball field should have lights. Because they can't even play games at night @ DHS they have to go and use the Sports Plex. Why even have a softball field if you not going to play on it.

I agree with youxtrapt, but they are making the raise sound like it is form accomplishment. I'm not seeling Coach Goodwin short by any means. He has done awesome things wiht the DHS football program! If it is about accomplishment, why arent any of the other coaches that are doing good jobs, or even the teachers getting any more money? I cant answer my own question on that one. O well, as I said earlier what happens happens and I cant change it. GOD BLESS!
