Hey everyone. Just found out about a site called Audio/Video Revolution or avrev.com that just put out a compiled list of what they consider the top 100 bands of all time. This list expands most genres of music but is mostly rock. See if you agree or disagree with their findings or would you have included other bands not listed. Here is the link: http://www.avrev.com/bands/.

Unreal! Aerosmith is way down at 31 and Lynard Skynard is at 71. And, no Matchbox 20, but Coldplay made the list...No way, Mr. Tony. I demand a re-vote!

Thanks for the link and list, though. :)

If this doesn't include Ella Fitz-Gerald, Count Basie,Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Artie Shaw, Chris Conner, June Christy, Dave Bruebeck, Edy Gormey
, Mel Torme, I could go on and on and on. These are true musicians of the last century.

Well I didn't make the list, just reported the site. I don't understand what Coldplay is doing on the list at all, sorry to all who visit the site who like them. I actually like Matchbox 20 but don't feel that they should have been on this list as well. I guess you can see my favorite band made #1. YIPPEEEE!!!

Yes...I like them, as well as, Doris Day, Miles Davis, and Yo Yo Ma...who weren't on the list or even---Van Morrison.

Oh well...we should publish our own list!

Sorry Mr. Fleming but it seems like they didn't make the list. I think the closest to any of those was probably James Brown.

Any list of rock bands that doesn't have the Beatles at #1 is fundamentally flawed. It makes for boring, predictable lists, but it's still true. Without J,P,G & R, there would be no #1 through #10.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

And probably the reason your selections weren't mentioned fleming because this is the top 100 BAND list.. not performers.

that's why I can't complain about Bob Dylan not being at #2 !

But beatles definately belong at #1... are these people crazy?

Where is one of the greatest hair bands of the 1980's...the british boys...Def Leppard?

1983's Pyromania ignited radio stations and set store shelves on fire. The band crafted the blueprint that would be copied and duplicated for the better part of the 1980s. With Marilyn Monroe starring in "Photograph," and hits "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" in heavy MTV rotation, the album went on to sell 9 million albums, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Charts. Only Michael Jackson's Thriller kept Def Leppard from the throne.

Go figure?

In all sincerity, I really do like the Partridge Family and I never missed an episode of the show when I was a young girl. I do wish they would show reruns. However, I certainly understand why they didn't make the list.

It really is a cool website. I sort of think CCR should have been higher on the list though. I always loved them.

Did anybody read at the beginning how they ranked everybody? That makes some of these make sense, and I do still disagree with some of them, but there were only like 3 in the top 20 I would remove! But, I felt like alot of them would have been higher too...Motley Crue, Rage Against the Machine (love, love, love them!), CCR, Nirvana, GnR, the Doors, Aerosmith. I don't necessarily think Queen and U2 should be in the top 10, although I LOVE them both...just not over classic Doors!! Oh well, not my list!

Cool post. I agree with most of their top 10, the order may be a little mixed up, but for the most part the right groups are there. I do find a couple of things odd here though. (As mentioned ealier) Where's Def Leopard?? Nirvana #50 ?? Also, how can this be: 66. Audioslave ..... 71. Lynyrd Skynyrd
Don't get me wrong here I do like Audioslave, but how can a fairly new group(even if their members are from other top 100 bands) be ranked even close to a legendary group such as Lynyrd Skynyrd in a chart called "Top 100 Bands of All-Time." Skynyrd has had a strong influence on many artists and were recently (march 13, 2006) inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. I think that maybe they are just getting a bad rap here. For example they got 52 out of 100 for songs when Freebird consistently ranks 1st or 2nd in many charts as the greatest rock song of all-time. Or maybe I'm just a little bit biased for our Southern Rock. JMO

Easyrider

Sorry....I really DONT LIKE the Beatles....never have, never will.

I realize everyone has different tastes, but consider the following:

The Beatles (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=the-beatles&sbid=lc12a)'influence on rock music (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=rock-n-roll&sbid=lc12a) and world culture was – and remains – profound. Their huge commercial success and public acceptance started an almost immediate wave of changes including: a shift from US dominance of rock and roll (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=rock-n-roll&sbid=lc12a) to UK acts; a shift from soloists to groups; a shift from professional songwriters (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=songwriter&sbid=lc12a) to self-penned songs (a DIY (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=do-it-yourself&sbid=lc12a) attitude); changes in fashion such as mop-top haircuts (highly controversial at the time). They provided the dominant template for the self-contained four-piece guitar group. Their continued commercial success meant that their experimentation or innovations in composition, instrumentation, recording, cover art and fashion, coupled with their own 'personas', were broadcast around the world and quickly imitated.

Before their emergence, it was common for rock bands to rely on professional songwriters for their material and to rely heavily on studio musicians for their recordings.

It has been said that after the Beatles' initial appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=the-ed-sullivan-show&sbid=lc12a), many who saw them perform were inspired to quickly form rock groups. The Byrds (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=the-byrds&sbid=lc12a) are one of innumerable groups of that era who cite seeing A Hard Day's Night (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=18tjxtq915vky?tname=a-hard-day-s-night-film&sbid=lc12a) as one of their major sources of inspiration.

The Beatles created a new paradigm for performers in popular music. Their multiple talents enabled them to combine their instrumental abilities, their vocal harmony singing and a songwriting strength of writer-performers.

Their concert performances in the mid 1960s electrified audiences and provided a huge burst of inspiration for local musicians in the countries they visited.

All this aside, The Beatles' legacy is of course tremendous, and they are popularly conceived to be one of the most influential artists of the last century.

Thanks so much for your post Easyrider

people may not like the Beatles, but you cannot deny how big and imporant they were to music from 1960 - today. I think the most picky thing about my music tastes is that the group MUST have the do-it-yourself attitude. If they don't write their songs, play their instruments, sing without being heavily filtered and tweaked, then I don't have much respect for them as "artists."

And I don't care who you are, and what your taste in music is -- the Beatles covered so many different styles and genres from 20's flapper music to core basic blues to rock and roll, indian, psychadelic rock, and even children's songs. I think no matter what, you can find at LEAST one song in their catalogue that you just love.

Do both of you like The End -- "the last words from the beatles recorded on an album" -- "And in the end, the love you take -- is equal to the love you make."
... not regarding the hidden track "her majesty" ... on abbey road? It was a pretty good "jam" but I didn't think anyone liked it that much :-p

the medley's on side B of Abbey Road are classic... I know John hated them.. but maybe he was just bitter at the time of that comment.

Oh, I fully understand the influence the Beatles had on Rock'n'Roll, would not dream of not giving credit where credit is due. I've just never cared for their music.....dont know why, just could not get "into" it. To each his/her own, especially where music is concerned.

Gimme Def Leopard, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Skynard (only in small doses)....heck, most "Southern Rock" bands. We be jammin' then! LOL!

I would have agreed with this 110% about 3 years ago. However, I am about to exit teenage years, and have thus been to contemporary concerts. And let me tell you, MUSIC HAS EVOLVED PAST STANDARD ROCK! It is a lot better now, with the addition of great Folk Metal bands, Japanese Metal bands, Pagan bands, Tribal, Exotic, Black, Gothic, Techno-Metal, Hardcore, Grunge-Metal, and a million others, literally. I still agree with the list - as a CLASSICAL list, but no longer as a modern top 100 bands with pure tallent.
