I was wondering what are the working conditions like for our local Firemen and Police ? I know at one time that alot of our officers were working on their days off to fix up the new station and our "fireboys" were stuck in a run down trailer behind Gary's old place. Is the city living up to its responsibilities by giving you guys what you need ?

I'll make sure my husband logs on tonight and respond to this thread. They are still in the trailor behind Gary Malone's old place.

To me the city needed to focus on our Fire Dept and Police Dpt instead of going in the golfing business. They could have use that money to buid a nice fire station or give the police and firemen a raise. Just does not add up to me. Its like compairing apples to oranges.

I agree...it seems to me that this city wastes more money on bullcrap than investing it into our own police and fire fighters--the very ones who help the people when they need them--and then listen to the city gripe when they don't have the resources to help everybody. JMO...

We need to take action and protect those who protect us ! We need to go to the city council on behalf of our friends and family who serve our town and DEMAND ! that the get the tools they need to do their jobs. Money for putting their lives on the line everyday and a nice work enviroment to do their work ! This city takes for granted the men and women who serve us . We should not wait until a emergency hits to praise our police and fireman ! They should be remembered everyday. Hurricane season is here and they will be working harder than ever away from their families, they SHOULD be compensated for it !
I would love to organize a group to approach the city council on this issue.

I have brought the subject up with some of our firefighters on the condition of the downtown station. They are grateful that some citizens are more concerned about their living and work conditions than the Mayor and council. I also noticed some of our police cars look like they are getting up there in the mileage department. I saw one parked in front of City Hall last week and the rear end looked like Jeff Gordon was doing some more bump drafting. A lot of the paint was stripping off. I still believe a new City Hall/Police/Fire complex is the answer. But I think the Police and Fire Department don't want to be that close to the Mayor's office.

I agree that something needs to be done. I don't think a complex housing everyone is the answer. I think that each department needs its own building. I have worked for a police department and court system before that their building was shared by the mayors office, planning department, and building department. There was no where to expand by any department. There were also a few offices that housed habitat for humanity and other programs for a while too I think. There was always problems between departments trying to decide whose budget maintains what part of the building. There was a problem also of people hanging around the area of the police department who didn't need to hear what was going on (departmental plans). It was a big mess.

I worked for this city for a number of years as a firefighter under the previous administration. Things were not that great then, but they were better than they are now. We were never housed in a trailer, that when the wind blew hard , not to mention the threat of a storm, we had to pack up and move. There are a lot of issues these guys have that have not been brought forward. I still work in emergency services in this city and I'm proud to say that I work for an organization that cares about their people. When I worked for the city the building that was the fire station downtown was about to fall down around our ears. The city moves the fire department out, I believed the building changed hands, funds are aquired, and now the building is simply beautiful inside and out.
There is nothing wrong with making the city (especially the downtown area) look better. But before those guys were moved out, don't you think there should have been somewhere prepared for them to go. These guys risk their lives running into a building when everyone else is running out, and they deserve better. I agree with LPL we as citizens need to fill the council chamber (the old fire station) and make our voices heard. I believe the way to do this is by forming a group, requesting to be on the agenda, and presenting our concerns to the council in an orderly manner. All of us need to show up and have one spokesperson for the group. Once again this is just my opinion.
