Bush caught off-guard in chat with Blair

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (CNN) -- An open microphone caught President Bush in an unguarded moment Monday as the escalating crisis in the Middle East prompted him to use an expletive in a conversation with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Bush and Blair were aware that an event at the Group of Eight summit was a photo opportunity, with media representatives present. Blair later turned off the microphone.

The president was expressing frustration at the United Nations' stance on the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon. (Watch Bush use the 's' word during a chat with Blair -- 1:31) (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/world/2006/07/17/sot.bush.expletive.affl','2006/07/24');)

Apparently not expecting an open mic to pick up his remarks, Bush told Blair: "See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this **** and it's over."

Earlier Monday, Blair and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for the deployment of an international force in southern Lebanon to help end the spiraling conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Islamic militant group that holds seats in the Lebanese government. (Full story)

The United States and Israel say that Hezbollah receives financial and political assistance, as well as weapons and training, from Iran and Syria.

The fighting began last week after Hezbollah guerrillas abducted two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.

"What about Kofi Annan?" Bush asked Blair. "I don't like the sequence of it. His attitude is basically cease-fire and everything else happens." (Watch Bush explain why Israel has "every right" to defend itself -- :59)

Blair responded, "I think the thing that is really difficult is you can't stop this unless you get this international presence agreed."

Bush has resisted calling for a cease-fire between Hezbollah and Israel. The United States seeks Hezbollah's dismantlement under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559, which calls for the "disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias."

Bush said that he feels "like telling Kofi to get on the phone with [Syrian President Bashar] Assad and make something happen. We're not blaming Israel, and we're not blaming the Lebanese government."

Bush also told Blair that he would be sending Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the region soon.

"She's going," Bush said. "I think Condi's going to go pretty soon."

Despite the president's remarks, the White House told The Associated Press that it had nothing to announce about a Rice trip to the Middle East.

Earlier Monday, Annan said the Security Council would have to discuss the matter of an international presence, but he said a force would be only a part of a comprehensive plan to stop the cross-border attacks.

Annan appealed to both sides to "focus their targets narrowly and to bear in mind that under international humanitarian law, they have an obligation to spare civilian lives" and infrastructure.

Bad link on the video, but you can access it from the CNN page.

What is the big deal? Other than talking with his mouth full, I don't hear anything wrong with what Bush said, or Blair either.

And "the S word"?? Come on! When did **** become "the S word"? I say that word every time I talk about Bush, so I can't fault him for saying it in a private conversation.

I just thought it was funny... that he was CAUGHT saying it... rather than standing up at a podium here in the US at a formal press conference and saying to Hezzbolah "Stop that ****!"

But for once, I'm not going to criticize Bush...they'd have caught a whole lot worse if I had been sitting there...f-bombs for everyone!

"Upon spotting a veteran political reporter in the crowd and pointing him out to his running mate, Dick Cheney, as the two stood at the podium waving to the assembled crowd, Bush said, "There's Adam Clymer, major-league ******* from The New York Times." Cheney, also unaware the microphones were turned on, agreed, saying, "Oh yeah, he is, big time." "

thanks... lol.

maybe we should reconsider bush being our president if he uses this kind of language.

i remember seeing a clip of him shooting a bird at somebody. actually i have seen another picture of bush shooting a bird. i had it as my avatar at one time.

I challenge anyone to find a politician that DOESN'T use that language or shoot birds occasionally...Don't condone the behavior, but I would be a hypocrite big time if I were to fuss about it. About the bird thing, if I had people taking my freakin' picture and bothering me all the time like he does, my hand would get stuck in the "number one" position!

A President that shoots birds and says what he thinks... a Vice President that shoots politicians and says what he thinks... Future leaders taking classes in shooting and cussing. I'm proud of both of them.

I would be worried if he didn't cuss. To me that's at least letting me know he's letting off some steam that is caused by the stress of running a whole freakin' country, instead of letting it all build up and go postal!

Your sense of humor worries me sometimes! LOL I really like you kid for voicing your opinion...I think it's great, but don't take things so literally!

If Bush didn't curse or shoot birds, he wouldn't be human!!

How many of us don't let one fly during moments of extreme stress? I don't condone it, but I've done it too many times myself to criticize President Bush for it. The situation in the Middle East is a crisis of monumental proportions. Naturally, the people in power are more than a little stressed by it. I actually enjoyed the clip. After watching all the bombs and bloodshed on the news, I was amused to see the prez calling Hezbollah's activities s***. It is not a nice word, but Hezbollah's militant bloodshed deserves to be called a lot worse!

Last time I checked Bush was human and is allowed to make mistakes like that. -Shrugs- Plus, if it's a private convo, then he's allowed to. It's not like the President isn't allowed to use words, that if used by anyone else would be ignored mind you.

I'll admit I voted for the man. In recent times, he's started to piss me off, but he actually won a few points back from me with this. Yeah, that probably makes me a country gal at heart, but I think it was great.

I like him more each time he is caught by an open mike. Maybe he should do that intentionally and more often, so we can see what he is really saying and thinking. Hell, he's appearing to be more like us than I first thought. Wish he could run again! ( if you listen to the media discuss his ratings, you'd think he could) OH WELL, I'll settle for Rudy.

Ok, please stop me if I'm wrong, but if you are President of the United States of America, you can pretty much say anything you like. Wait I a minute, I forgot... if you are a Citizen of the United States of America you can pretty much say what you like!(Except that you are going to kill the President and that there is a bomb on this plane!) Isn't it great to be an American!!
