New Desktop?

If I want to get a desktop that would be good enough to run a small, home based business on, what would be the kind that would last the longest to suit my needs well? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: New Desktop?

I'm on my second DELL & haven't had any problems w/ it , so I would have to say Dell. You can custom build one. I would stay away from Gateway. HP makes fairly good systems now.

Re: New Desktop?

We bought this dell in 1999...thanks to a sweet, wonderful, talented, good looking son in law it's still good. I think this is our 3rd hard drive though. Looks like a dinasoar, but it's not! lol

Thanks, Mom.
Well, let's see now.....I wouldn't go with Dell unless, when your computer has a problem, you like talking to a western Indian that speaks minimal english. Gateway probably has the best tech support, but they make crappy computers. HP makes a good computer, but they moved all their support to Mexico. Alienware used to be a good high end computer but Dell bought them out. Falcon Northwest is a good computer or ABS computers. Those are a couple of companies that not many people have heard of. If you want the best computer.......BUILD IT YOURSELF! Asus motherboard, AMD processor, corsair memory, seagate or western digital hard drive. That's the main part. You know what you are getting when you build it yourself. Dell, HP, Gateway........all the big companies build with the cheapest parts they can get their hands on and a lot of the time you can't go out and buy a part off the shelf and put in them.....you have to buy from the company that manufactured the comptuer. Also, if someone wants to argue about warranties, then I'll say that if you buy retail, most if not all parts come with at least a 3 year warranty and most hard drives now come with a FIVE year warranty. You will be paying out the @$$ for a 5 year warranty on anything bought from Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. Just my opinion, there are lots of people that know about computers on this site, and they probably know more about them than me.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Re: New Desktop?

If you are starting with nothing, I think you'll do OK to go with Dell. You can get a decent PC with amenidies like a 19 in LCD screen for under $600. Not knowing what kind of business we're running, these PC's will handle most software tasks with little trouble. You can build a tower that's got better parts inside, but by the time you've bought everything else (disk drives, monitor, speakers, etc.) you will have spent more.

If your business requires video editing or other graphic-intensive work, your PC will run a little higher.

Re: New Desktop?

Dell's hardware quality has been lacking of late.
I agree with Mr Flockery, custom built system. Frankly I've not been impressed with any OEM's lately aside from Toshiba.
