Multiple studies… did not find a significant association between consumption of soda or fruit drinks and [weight gain] in American children and adolescents.”
My question is why do we keep researching this?
The simple fact is that, generally, if you are consuming more calories than you are burning, you gain weight. If you are consuming fewer calories than you are burning, you generally lose weight. If you are consuming about the same number of calories that you are burning, you will probably keep your weight about the same.
Of course, there are some other considerations, but that's just the basic facts. Thus, if you are drinking five Cokes a day and running 10 miles...you probably won't gain weight. But, conversely, if you are only drinking diet beverages and laying on the couch all day, you probably will gain weight.
Oh how we danced and we swallowed the nights for it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh how we danced away all of the lights we've always been out of our minds

You missed one other scenario above. Me! I am one of those rare persons that never loose or gain weight regardless. My weight has varied no more than 10 pounds since I was 15 Y/old 1950. And believe me I ain't complaineing!
I usually don't gain or lose weight either. I quit smoking 5 months ago and have gained 8-10 lbs. Other than that, my weight used to fluctuate 1 or 2 pounds.
