mp3 file compression

Can someone give me a quick run down of how I can compress mp3 songs in my iTunes library to allow me to put lots on songs on a CD? Can this be done? My dad has a CD given to him by a co-worker a few years back that has almost 2,000 songs on it. I was amazed at the number of songs on one CD.

Any help would be appreciated.

2000 songs? At 5 mb a song (average) that would be 10000 mb, or 10 gigs. I'm not aware of a disk that can hold 10 gigs of music. Now if you bump the bit rate down below radio quality, then you could fit 2000 songs on a DVD disc. Most MP3's, however, are usually larger than that.

For ITunes, what is the size of the average song?
