Since we discussed the federal attempt to raise the minimum wage, I wondered what thoughts might be on a state increase proposed by gov candidate Lucy Baxley.

I think I've already shared pretty much all of my views on raising the minimum wage (see here (http://demopolislive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9567&highlight=minimum)).
Politically, I think that this is a good move for Baxley. One of Riley's major arguments against her is that "she has no platform," which is sort of true if you look back on it. She definitely needs to build a legitimate platform of her own, and reply to Riley's, if she is to have any chance this fall.

Not to say that I was going to vote for her to begin with but I'm leaning more towards Riley now.

We know nothing about her. What are her plans for the state. I will most likely vote for Reily. Have not been real happy with him. But he faces opposition trying to get anything done for the state. Let's face it. Politicans don't really want us to know how they are voting or they would be happy for Christian Coalition to publish how they vote.

Just like the Christian Coalition doesn't really want us to know where their money is coming from (Indian gaming) or they would be happy to tell the legislature where the money comes from. Maybe our legislators are starting to see that the Christian Coalition is just another corrupt lobbying group that clothes itself in "Christianity" to get money....and doesn't want any part of it anymore.
I think there's a thread on this.....

But he faces opposition trying to get anything done for the state.Well I for one am happy he faced opposition for his plan to push thru the biggest tax increase in the history of the state. I don't see where that would've been good for the state when Alabama ranks one of the poorest states in per capita income.

Well...technically the tax increase would have only truly effected the very wealthiest in Alabama and increase property taxes nominally on agricultural and residential land...but that's all water under the bridge now.

Me too! That was my biggest problem with him! He sure let a whole lot of people down.

It also irks me that they now reappraise property every year. Baxley says her first priority is to get that repealed. Riley says there's nothing he can do about it. http://www.wtvm.com/Global/story.asp?S=5258897&nav=menu91_2
Making this a part of her platform is definately a plus for her so far as I'm concerned.

She has my vote. I have always liked her. She is a smart lady who knows what its like to be poor. She grew up on a farm so she says.
